A significant part of the roll out of the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa has been to provide customers with the ability to gather and digitise the stories of their communities. This may involve digitising existing library or public resources or creating digital content. Scanners, audio recorders and Kete (repositories for the digitised stories) are provided to allow communities to gather, digitise and store their stories to share through their public library.
"Kete" is the Māori word for basket but in this context it is an open source digital library and archiving software developed by Katipo Communications and the Horowhenua Library Trust. Kete can be used by library staff and members of the public to upload precious memories, photographs, audio or video and these can be grouped together thematically in "baskets".
Information collected in the Kete is OAI compliant and will be harvested to tools such as the National Digital Heritage Archive and Digital NZ.
For an example of how Kete can capture community stories and information read our Kete Hamilton case study.
Partner libraries may apply to have a Kete hosted by the People's Network either as their own library district or shared within a regional grouping. APNK will provide training for a staff member who will take on the role of administrator for that Kete. Libraries that decide to have a Kete will be provided with an A3 flatbed scanner to aid in their digitisation projects. Digital audio recorders will also be available for loan.
