Wanganui Library delivers 100,000 free internet sessions

27 May 2010

The Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa service has reached a milestone at Wanganui District Library with over 100,000 sessions having been utilised by library customers.

The APNK service has been running since May 2008 and is proving to be extremely popular with Wanganui library customers undertaking a range of activities, from writing CV’s, participating in online courses or staying in touch with family and friends through email and social networking sites.

Computers linked to the network are available at both the Davis Central City Library, Alexander Heritage & Research Library and Gonville Café Library. Free wifi access is also available to people with their own wireless enabled computers and other wireless devices.

Cr Sue Westwood is pleased to see the service being so well used. “Wanganui is an underserved community in terms of digital access. Initiatives such as the Aotearoa People’s Network, the Computers in Homes and the new Computer Clubhouse are all positive steps to address this issue.”

“Computers are now an essential part of many people’s lives. The library is currently seeing about 1750 people a week come in and use the free computer and internet services. It is essential that we continue to be able to support those users and meet the demand, as well as keep developing our other innovative computer based initiatives.”
